eBook Pricing Considerations

Deciding on a price for your eBook is always a difficult challenge.

  • Do you go low and try to sell it cheaply thinking you will get more sales?
  • If you sell too low will readers think your eBook is not worth a higher price?
  • If you charge too much are you pricing out some readers?
  • Do you sell your first eBook at a low price and then sell your following eBooks at a higher price?

These are all questions faced by authors. Pricing an eBook is dependent on many factors and should be done on a per eBook basis.

Choose a Low Price When:

  • You are comfortable in doing so!
  • You want to target readers who look for cheap eBooks.
  • You are a new and unknown author.
  • Competition is very high
  • Information on your topic is free or widely availability
  • Format is an eBook (due to lower production costs)
  • It did not take the author a long-time to write
  • Author royalty percentage is high
  • If the content of your eBook is dated
  • Distribution channel is quick and simple
  • Your target market is large in size thus increasing volume sales
  • Your marketing costs are quite low
  • You have long-term profit potential

Choose a High Price When:

  • You already have a large following
  • Information on your topic is hard to come by and is unique
  • You do not have a lot of competition
  • It took the author a long-time to write
  • Author royalty percentage is low
  • If the content of your eBook will last and still be relevant over time
  • Your target market is a niche market
  • Your marketing costs are quite low
