O’Reilly Media Takes Over Safari Books Online eBook Subscription Service
The eBook subscription model is the new battleground for the big publishers and online retailers. Amazon recently announced its eBook subscription service ‘Kindle Unlimited’ on the heels of already established services offered by Oyster and Scribd.
Now we learn that O’Reilly Media has acquired Pearson’s 50% stake in Safari Books Online which is a niche eBook subscription service that targets the technology and business categories.
This move again backs-up my view that the future of selling (and borrowing) eBooks will be more targeted towards niche groups. Amazon, Oyster and Scribd are targeting all categories and there will be a winner among these three in serving this ‘all-in-one’ market. However, the ‘everything’ store will eventually lose some market share as we start to see new entrants that understand the importance of focusing on niche groups of interest. Safari Books Online is one example of strategically targeting the business and technology categories.

Safari Books Online began as a joint venture with Pearson back in 2001 and until now, both had a share in the business. Safari Books Online offers over 25,000 books, videos and courses on technology and business. Tim O’Reilly wrote on his blog; ‘O’Reilly and Safari will work together to create new features and products.’

Safari is now a wholly owned subsidiary of O’Reilly. Developed by O’Reilly and launched as a joint venture with Pearson in 2001, Safari will continue to operate as an independent entity offering more than 25,000 books, videos, and courses on technology and business topics from O’Reilly, Pearson and the 200 additional publishers and imprints now on the platform.
